Celebrations are a way we remind ourselves of what is meaningful in our lives - markers on our journey. They provide a way to link our own sense of meaning with those of the communities in which we live - reinforce a sense of interdependence - Suzanne Mitten Lewis, 2002
Celebrations can encompass public and private rituals, ceremonies and events, festivals and holidays.
Celebrations aim to be a positive experience (and associated with festivity and rejoicing). They may contain elements of ceremony and ritual. Celebrations are often seen as 'special' or out of the ordinary.
Why are we interested in celebrations?
Celebrations have been neglected or ignored in recent times. They are perceived as frivolous and superficial. Yet when done with purposeful intent and the adoption of good processes, celebrations can not only bring joy and fun into peoples lives they can empower individuals and communities, facilitate social cohesion, affirm individuals and cultural identities, facilitate a sense of belonging and place, manage tensions within and between groups, enhance stability, either bind or shift values, and foster community participation and spirit.
Celebrations play a vital role in developing, reinforcing and changing behaviours and cultures. By positively contributing to the social needs of individuals, organisations and communities they can contribute to creating healthy individuals and communities.
This program area aims to explore the role of celebration in contemporary Australian society and to support others to develop meaningful celebrations that positively contribute to society. The program aims to do this by:
1) Supporting networking and dialogue through forums and on-line exchanges. Two forums have already been conducted (March 02 forum information) , two more are currently planned:
- Celebrations stream within the Centre for Popular Education Conference 'Education and Social Action' December 11-13, 2002
- Celebrations and Health. July 2003 Melbourne
2) Research and evaluation projects
We are currently working with local government in NSW and will be supporting the community festivals and community building project: Evaluation of the Wauchope 'Bago festival'.
We are also currently exploring funding to support research and professional development for celebration practitioners.
3) Consultancy services
Consultancy support is being provided to VicHealth in relation to the review of their Communities Together funding scheme.
