for Self Determination) was launched in October, 1990 at a conference
which was attended by over 200 people, including the Federal Minister
for Aboriginal Affairs. The final report received extensive media coverage.
It was the subject of a SBS television program, numerous radio interviews

Aboriginal Adult Education and Community
Development in the Central West of NSW
In March, 1989 a training needs analysis was conducted of 7 community
organisations located in Walgett, Collarenebri, Pilliga and Lightning
Ridge. Organisations in these towns had formed a regional training committee.
The needs analysis was conducted by means of review of program descriptions,
semi-structured interviews with staff and committee members, and a half

Aboriginal Community Development Research
and Training Program
(conducted for the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group)
The project was innovative because it provided an opportunity for local
Aboriginal people to work and be trained as community educators or community
development agents in their own communities. In many Aboriginal communities
such roles are still performed by non-Aboriginal outsiders. The project
obtained a second year's funding in 1991 and was taken over by local
community committees. The university's role was to provide an intensive
training program to the Aboriginal community educators. This involved
field supervision, delivering in-service training workshops and co-ordinating
their work in the Diploma in Adult Education.

in Narrabri and Wee Waa (NW NSW), facilitating a series of meetings,
a workshop and conducting interviews.

the state of formal education and Indigenous Australians. The report
reviews three main areas of relevance to Aboriginal community-controlled
education and the work of the independent providers, namely:
- Self-determination and the role of independent Aboriginal organisations
- Aboriginal adult education policies, programs and providers
- Other education-related issues, including research, cross-cultural education,
prisoner education and economic development.

Reconciliation Kit for Young Australians
The purpose of this paper is to assist the planning of an Aboriginal
reconciliation program for the Girl Guides and The Scout Association
of Australia. The paper reports on preliminary reviews of past and current
activities within the Scout and Girl Guides movements that are directly
relevant to Aboriginal reconciliation. It should be noted that continuing
efforts will be made to gather further information about past and current
Scout and Girl Guides activities as this will assist the planning of
the reconciliation program. The paper also briefly describes the scope
and nature of educational materials and activities relevant to Aboriginal
reconciliation that have been developed by other organisations and people.

Best Practice and Benchmarking in Aboriginal Community-Controlled Adult Education
(1997)
Bob Boughton & Deborah Durnan
Aboriginal community-controlled providers represent a distinct type of adult
education provision whose importance has long been acknowledged in research
findings and policy development. However the work of these providers has been
the subject of empirical investigation. This study reports on the findings
of an action research project conducted by the Federation of Independent Aboriginal
Providers, funded by the Australian National Training Authority to investigate
the nature of ‘best practice’ in the Aboriginal community-controlled
sector, and to develop guidelines to assist providers to benchmark their practices
